Jatt and Juliet

This is a Punjabi film, based in Canada. It is a romantic comedy, starring two fairly low key actors, Diljit Dosanjh and Neeru Bajwa. It is an absolutely hilarious film, and I think it was a breath of fresh air.

You first meet Fateh’s poor character, and then you go on to meet Pooja’s slightly well off character. You realise who they are and then when you see them bump into each other you begin to see how their ‘relationship’ will go. When you see the old lady telling Pooja that a young lad has already taken the apartment, you know that it is going to be him, but eventually she moves in too, and trouble ensues. The main cause of the trouble is them actually becoming friends and Pooja then attempting to get him the Canadian citizenship that he literally dreams of, but this only ends in shit when the girl that he is attempting to woo ends up having an African citizenship, so he drops her and gets into trouble with the landlady and gets them both kicked out. Then they are back to hating each other, he getting shelter at the Gurdwara and she is staying with a friend for a while. Then they work in enemy restaurants, eventually they end up being friends again, but you can see that a romance is blooming. But we forget one thing by this point, she is engaged back home.

The film was pretty well made, and especially seeing as it was made by a relatively unknown director. It was really funny, but I’m not sure if the humour was the general kind, or related, in particular, to the Indian culture.

Either way, I thoroughly enjoyed it and was pissing myself laughing at a lot of it, not gonna lie though, a bit of the humour was lost on me, because I’m not fresh off of the boat, but still worth a watch. Obviously you’ll have to like reading subtitles or understand Punjabi though.

The Five-Year Engagement

Yet another romantic comedy, set in the US of A but not quite as boring as the others. It was funny as fuck and gave a few turns that you didn’t expect, as well as a few that you did. With Jason Segel having a major part in the movie as a writer and a star of the film, it was bound to be funny. Also starring the quintessentially British Emily Blunt, it was clear that the film was going to be funny and girly, and strangely enough they made a really cute couple.
They get engaged, of course, that is what the film is based on. It is a super romantic proposal that made all of the girls look at their other halves with a look that just said “I want that”. You see them starting to plan the wedding and then their need to make it awesome when Emily’s sister gets knocked up and has a quickie, but super cute, wedding. Now, here is the ‘drop’ of the film. Emily gets a job and Jason leaves his super awesome chef job to go with her and he ends up working in a sandwich shop. You can see from this alone that the resentment is going to start, but the point is he keeps at it, to make her happy. Then her contract is extended and loads of shit goes down. Then they break-up, and that’s that.
The film was really well written and super funny, but I think that there wasn’t enough buzz about the film. I really did enjoy it though, it was funny and romantic and normal, you saw the way couples actually are, the arguing and the resentment and hatred that can develop. And you also see that sometimes, just sometimes, a baby will make him stay.
So yes, a good film, and another reason that I probably enjoyed it was that the cinema was empty, I did go to see it on the opening day and so I expected a load of people, but nope. The cinema was pretty dead, I put this down to the fact that it wasn’t a Wednesday, and so there wasn’t the Orange Wednesday offer which is the thing that draws in the students.
IT’S A HILARIOUS FILM. So go and watch it, especially if you liked films like The Break-Up, or if you’re a fan of messed up but adorable romances. GO! NOW! BYE!

Gone

Gone is a thriller, not great, but not awful either. Amanda Seyfried takes the lead role of Jill Conway. The film also stars Jennifer Carpenter and Wes Bentley. The film is set in Portland, which honestly means nothing to me…I know jack shit about the geography of the U.S.A.
So, basically it goes that Jill was kidnapped a few years back and after it happened her parents died and so she has been in psych wards and on suicide watch because of all the crap that went down over a short period of time. Next thing you know – as if this girl needs anymore stress – her sister goes missing and Jill is convinced that it is the same guy that took and tried to kill her. So, like any sane person, she goes to the police and then - with the police being as shit as they are - they don’t believe her. So she does their job herself, and she goes on a hunt for her kidnapper and her sister.
The whole film was kind of basic, I wasn’t seriously impressed by anyone aspect of it. The editing was typical of a thriller, the placement of music, the jump shots…yadayadayada. But to be honest, the fact that it stuck to the norms of thriller film editing was quite good, as it kind of needs to be all jumpy and dark and shit to make it any good. It took me like forty minutes to watch the last ten minutes of the film, because I had to keep pausing it to calm myself down (but that’s because I’m a whimp)
Anyway, on the whole the film is good. Films starring Amanda Seyfried do tend to be of a mint quality. But they could have veered off from the norm a little bit, because the film as a whole was pretty standard. Honestly, don’t really care too much, because I genuinely really enjoyed the film. I’m thinking that fans of Untraceable would probably like this film.

Avengers Assemble

This film is going to be BAD ASS! You know it is, without watching the trailer and without reading a synopsis, you know that this will be good. Do you know why? Cause superhero films are the one! As you can tell, I'm a bit of a Marvel nerd, but seriously, this will be the film of the year, 2012's version of Toy Story 3.
This film has loads of big names, it has great writers, and a typical Marvel plot. Normally I'd complain about something that didn't change the story at all, in this case though, I figure, why mess with perfection.
Marvel films are always received well and always bring in a ranged audience, from young kids, to middle-aged film nerds.
So, basically, Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) assembles a team of superheroes, including Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Captain America (Chris Evans), Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) and others to help defeat a load of villains that are led by Loki (Tom Hiddleston)
I am, without a doubt, going to the cinema to see this, them I'm buying it on DVD and adding it to my collection of superhero film. I CAN'T WAIT!

The Cabin in the Woods

Have Americans not yet realised that going on a holiday in the middle of nowhere will do nothing but get you killed?! There's minimal in this film that even makes it look remotely good. It has no big names  - which usually doesn't bother me, but for a film that looks this shit it would be helpful. It has a typical horror film plot, the only thing that is different is the whole science idea behind it, which is a great thought, but I honestly don't think that it will save the film.
If you like typical American horror films, then for you this will be a must see, but there's too many ideas that are being thrown around ('Ancient Ones', rituals, science, exploding tunnels etc.) and they haven't focused on one thing in particular, which means that the film has no full focus, it could be amazing, but it probably won't be. The idea of a controlled experiment has been used repeatedly, in different ways though, but from the trailer, this film looks like it could use a writer with a bit more creativity.
I'm not going to lie, I am curious, and I probably will watch it, but I'm definitely not going to the cinema and spending a ridiculous amount of money, just not worth it.

Lola Versus

"I think men are always looking for someone better and women are just looking for whatever works". This quote is pure truth, and because of that this film is definitely a must see. The film hasn't got any big names in it, but it is from a great studio. It's a film about what every woman goes through, losing the love of her life and then going through a series of adventures (for lack of a better word) and trying to find herself again. This film is all about discovery.
Lola gets dumped by her fiancĂ© three weeks before their wedding and feels lost, and you can't really blame her, she is coming up to thirty which is the age that most women see as being the point at which they should be all settled down and whatnot, so she goes on a trip of self discovery, travelling through a series of people and talking to friends about every aspect of her life. I like the look of it, but I'm not gonna lie, it does look like a woman's film. I don't think men would understand it, whereas women could watch this film and relate to at least a half of the shit that she goes through, I know that I can.
Probably going to buy it on DVD though, so it can be watched on repeat after break ups, which is what it looks best for.
Defo the 2012 version of 500 Days of Summer!

Ted

Creative. I liked the look of this film. It is an idea that hasn't been done before, but can it work? I mean, surely it should be the kind of film that you would take a young child to watch, right? Wrong! It is a film about growing up, changing and drifting away from people that you once couldn't live without. The trailer is well made, and the cast is pretty high end, you've got Mark Wahlberg, Mila Kunis and the amazing Seth MacFarlane, who was also a writer and the director. It is his first motion feature and looks to be quite a success. Honestly, the main demographic will probably be late teens and stoners, very similar to the audience of MacFarlane's earlier work such as Family Guy and American Dad.
The film is based around two best friends and one of them just happens to be a teddy bear. You see, when John (Mark Wahlberg) was younger, he made a wish to be able to talk to his teddy bear, and it came true. He grew up and got a great best friend, but now Lori (Mila Kunis) wants to get John to kick Ted out. This film is definitely a film worth watching. Something new and innovative has finally hit up the cinemas and I, for one, can't wait to watch it.

The Vow

Another romantic comedy, perfect for those you have just got into a relationship that, honestly, probably won't last. I know I probably sound bitter, but fuck me! I AM BORED SHITLESS of crappy films with the same story just different characters. Writers need to get creative, and I think most people would agree, but for those of you who don't, just wait until you break up with your current boy/girlfriend, then you'll understand how repetitive and boring these films are getting...NEW IDEAS MAN!

The Hunger Games

This film looked shit when I saw the advertisements, then I watched the trailers and changed my mind, only slightly though, kind of pushed me to find out the story though, so I went and looked at the whole film synopsis. WOW. I completely changed my mind and expected great things from this film, and that is exactly what I got, it had action, romance - but in a kind of twisted way, which is better that a soppy love story thing, so yeah I really didn't regret going to the cinema to see it, until the ending. Poor is the only word I can use to describe it, it had no substance whatsoever, just shitty, didn't really give the film an actual ending just kind of put it on pause. So, does this mean that there'll be a sequel...I hope so, because it could be great!
